Methods: the art of phenomenology

Updated: Nov 13, 2024

phenomenology, looking at art, art gallery

Phenomenology has been used in the service of art therapy for some time, it provides therapist with a framework for helping clients analyse and see clearly into their art images. The purpose of looking deeply is to enable the client to learn more about themselves by responding to the art work (in this case material phenomena) in order to make meaning.

"As a research methodology, phenomenology is uniquely positioned to help health professions education (HPE) scholars learn from the experiences of others. Phenomenology is a form of qualitative research that focuses on the study of an individual’s lived experiences within the world." Neuber, Wiktop and Varpio 2019.

I wanted to offer a very helpful guide for those who are interested in learning more about phenomenology, its philosophy and research implications, Neuber, Wiktop and Varpio have written a great article available on the NIH website titled "How phenomenology can help us learn from the experiences of others".
